Even though it was a short week, it seemed long as the children and teachers struggled to get back into routines. The two major highlights of the week were making our "High Hopes for 2012!" - these are our new years resolutions for the new year. Below is a picture of them as they are all on the bulletin board outside the classroom.
Our second highlight was that our big buddies taught us how to make snowflakes. So even though we don't have snow outside, our classroom tree is covered with beautiful snowflakes!

We hope you all had a wonderful holiday season. We are sending a paper notice to update you on what is happening in Division 9 and to remind you to check our class blog each week as this is our major source of communication. The best way to get to our blog is to go to the Fairview Elementary website, click on the class websites and then Ms Rowledge-Toscani/Ms Roberts. Each Friday the children help write the weekly post to share with you what they feel is important from their week of school. We often include pictures to help capture the students in action.
As you have may have heard, we have started ‘Sharing’. For the first few weeks the students can bring an item of choice from home. We are suggesting that they choose something created, won or something that is special to them. They need to have 3 clues for their item (which we recommend that they write down). They will share these clues with their classmates, leading them to guess what they have brought to share. For example: #1. It starts with a P. #2. I love to play this sport. #3. I got this when I went to the Canuck game. What is it? (hockey puck)

FAMILY READING – Each morning from 8:30-8:45 we would like to start our day with Family Reading. This will be an opportunity for parents/grandparents/aunts or uncles to come in and read. (Younger siblings are welcome to come as well to enjoy this book time.) We did this last year and it was very successful. Each morning we will need about 5 parents to join the class and read with a small group of students. We know that your children will be excited if you could drop in whenever you are available for 15 minutes at the beginning of their day.
Our next theme will be ‘Community and Careers’. We would like to invite interested parents to come in and share their career or profession with the students. In the past we have had firefighters/wood-working teachers/dental assistants/police officers /lawyers/plumbers and many others. It is a great opportunity for the students to learn about different career possibilities and also have their parent as our special visitor. If you are available please let us know by either writing a note in the planner, sending us an email or phoning the school.
These next few months are an exciting time in grade one and usually a time when we see good progress and growth in student’s reading and writing skills. Therefore it is very important that you continue to read with your child nightly and review their words of the week. We will be sending 5 words each week now. If your child can already read these words, please have them practice spelling the words and using them in sentences.
